Net-zero: What does it mean and how do we get there?

What is a net zero target?

A 100% reduction in greenhouse gases based on 1990 levels. Most of?this will come from stopping emissions being generated or released, but some form of negative emissions technology plus mass tree?planting will be needed to actively?take the remaining carbon out of the atmosphere.

Why has the government adopted a net zero goal?

When the Climate Change Act was passed in 2008, no global temperature goal had yet been agreed, and the government decided an 80% emission target was sufficient based on the available evidence.
