Water companies branded ‘complete disgrace’ over leaks and pollution

A trade union has criticised England’s water companies for wasting billions of litres of water through leaking pipes every day, saying the figures demonstrate that privatising the sector has failed to serve the public interest.

Data collected by GMB, the UK’s third largest union, shows water companies in England lost an average of 2.4 billion litres of water a day in 2017. That compares to an estimated 14.5 billion litres extracted each day for use in the public water supply, based on figures supplied by DEFRA
