Siteserv to appeal against waste fire fine

South Wales’ largest independent waste management company is to appeal against a £40,000 fine connected to a 2017 blaze.

An estimated 2,000 tonnes of waste caught fire spontaneously at the Siteserv Recycling site in Cowbridge, near Cardiff. Cardiff Magistrates court was told that the firm had failed to abide by its fire prevention plan (FPP) in the run up to the two-week conflagration.

The smoke was so thick that a nearby caravan park had to be closed for the duration of the fire. The site’s permit was soon suspended to prevent more waste from being brought in.
