Environment slips down the boardroom agenda

Many in the business community as well as the Government maintain that businesses can be left to shoulder environmental responsibilities without prodding from regulation. The Institute of Directors (IoD) has been prominent among them - but its own survey work has revealed that environmental issues are receiving less attention at board level among its members than they were a year ago.1 The results also show that legislation remains the single most important factor keeping the environment on the boardroom agenda in the manufacturing, mining, construction and distribution sectors - and that even the crude financial appeal of the "waste reduction pays" message is failing to persuade companies to act on the environment.
