‘Reckless’ firm to pay £10,000 for wasting water

Severn Trent has successfully prosecuted a drain cleaning firm for wasting water and tapping into its network without prior consent.

Birmingham Drain Services was fined £6,300 last week three breaches of the Water Industry Act in the West Midlands. Coventry Magistrates’ Court set costs at £2,466, adding a victim surcharge of £170 on top.

The firm breached paragraph 66I of the Act through making an unauthorised connection to the water main in Cawston, Rugby in December. It also installed an illegal standpipe, causing the erroneous measurement and waste of water, contrary to paragraph 73(1)(c), on three occasions.
