‘Unacceptable’: EA blasts environmental performance of England’s water companies

England’s water companies urgently need to “clean up their act” if they are to meet government targets on water pollution by 2020, the Environment Agency (EA) has warned.

Out of England’s nine water companies, only Northumbrian Water is meeting the EA’s standards for environmental performance, with five in need of some improvement and a further three – Southern, South West and Yorkshire Water – demonstrating an “unacceptable level of performance”.

“There is no getting away from the fact that performance in 2018 was simply unacceptable,” said EA chair Emma Howard Boyd in a foreword to the agency’s annual report on the water sector.
