DEFRA moots two-tier bird kill licensing scheme

A future bird kill licensing scheme could involve two separate sets of rules for controlling birds at a national and local level, according to a DEFRA report.

DEFRA said yesterday that there were “likely benefits” in developing such an approach to the use of discretionary lethal force for certain bird species at a “finer spatial scale”, which could be made available for a range of reasons. This could include tying the general licence scheme to agri-environmental schemes, species recovery programmes, and even invasive species control, according to the report.
