Waste industry shocked as Gove backs ‘all-in’ deposit return scheme

The waste industry has said it is “surprised” that environment secretary Michael Gove yesterday signalled his preference for introducing an 'all-in’ deposit return scheme (DRS), which would encompass all drinks bottles irrespective of size.

In a speech at Kew Gardens yesterday, Gove said that the waste prevention charity WRAP had “persuasively argued that the deeper that deposit return schemes drill into the value chain – extending to cover full life cycle costs under producer responsibility and an ‘all in’ standard – the clearer the financial and social signal will be to recycle”.
