Coffey: Government will not force smaller firms to report on waste

Waste minister Thérèse Coffey has said the government is unlikely to lower the threshold at which companies have to report on the amount of packaging waste they produce.

Currently, under the Producer Responsibility Obligations, packaging producers that handle less than 50 tonnes of packaging a year and have a turnover of less than £2m are not required to report on the amount of waste they produce.

Speaking in front of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRA) committee this morning, Coffey said: “I do not think we will lower the threshold. I do not anticipate the government increasing the regulatory burden on small businesses.”
