Glover review: Replace ‘fragmented’ landscape protections with new national landscape service

The lead author of a root and branch review into the state of designated sites in England has told DEFRA that the current system of landscape protection needs to be overhauled and replaced.

The comments were made by writer and former Department for Transport special adviser Julian Glover, who is leading a review into how designated landscapes meet the needs of England in the 21st century.

Glover’s review into England’s 10 national parks and 34 AONBs was launched last year as part of the government’s 25-year environment plan – including whether there is scope for expanding and improving the designated sites.
