'Drop the excuse-mongering': Gove tells utilities to improve environmental performance

Environment secretary Michael Gove has called in the chief executives of water and sewerage firms, calling on them to “prove that they take their environmental obligations seriously”.

The meeting today, alongside representatives of the Environment Agency, Drinking Water Inspectorate, Ofwat and the Consumer Council for Water, follows the Environment Agency describing the industry’s environmental performance as “simply unacceptable” last week.

Gove responded by telling the sector it should “drop the excuse-mongering” as it has “a responsibility to distribute our most precious natural resource, and must act as stewards of our environment”.
