Environment Bill policy statement: 9 things you need to know

DEFRA has today set out further details of its progress towards the introduction of the Environmental Bill in a policy statement and a series of consultation responses on proposed biodiversity, waste and water policy changes. Here’s what you need to know.

1 Mandatory biodiversity net gain
As expected, DEFRA will introduce a requirement for new commercial and residential developments to more than make up for their environmental impacts, either on site or through financial contributions to improve habitats elsewhere. However, the policy will not include a tariff on biodiversity loss due to concerns about potentially costly bureaucracy. It will also set out a new framework for Local Nature Recovery Strategies to support biodiversity projects, introduce a legal duty to consult on felling street trees and set up voluntary conservation covenants with landowners to promote long-term environmental protection for individual parcels of land.
