Great crested newts: Natural England reveals pond replacement ratio

Developers would be required to create four new ponds for great crested newts for every one lost to development under criteria set out by wildlife regulator Natural England.

Published earlier this month, the wildlife regulator’s framework for district licensing provides a new template for a “responsible body”, such as a council, to apply for a licence that, if granted, will “improve the conservation status of great crested newts and their habitats” should development proposals affect their habitat, the regulator said.

Great crested newts are a European Protected Species under the Habitats Directive and it is an offence to capture, kill, injure or disturb them or their habitat without a licence from Natural England.
