The cost of compliance: are businesses getting more for their money?

An increase in charges has pulled in an additional £5m in annual fee income for the Environment Agency, but the regulator’s performance on determination times has in some cases got worse

When the Environment Agency (EA) revealed its new fees structure to the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management’s (CIWM’s) hazardous waste and waste regulation special interest groups, “there was a sharp intake of breath, and quite a few swear words”, recalls Tina Benfield. And no wonder: “There was quite a big hike in the overall charges,” notes Benfield, who is the CIWM’s technical services development manager.
