Coffey retains position as environment minister

New environment secretary Theresa Villiers has largely maintained the same ministerial team at DEFRA that served under Michael Gove, with Thérèse Coffey continuing as environment minister.

Coffey has retained her responsibilities for waste and air quality, although now elevated from parliamentary under secretary of state to minister of state. Writing on Twitter, she said that she was “delighted to continue as minister for environment while being promoted”. She had backed Boris Johnson’s bid for leadership of the Conservative Party.

Former farming minister George Eustice returns to the department. In place for five and a half years, Eustice had been DEFRA’s longest-serving farming minister until he resigned from office in February over Brexit. The staunch eurosceptic was replaced by Robert Goodwill, who has returned to the backbenches.
