EA in contact with Sri Lanka over suspected hazardous waste dump

The Environment Agency (EA) has confirmed it is in contact with the Sri Lankan authorities over reports that illegal hazardous waste from the UK - reportedly including suspected human remains - has been discovered at the port of Colombo.

According to Sri Lanka's Daily Mirror newspaper, more than 100 containers containing waste including syringes and suspected human remains from mortuaries were abandoned at the port.

Many of the containers, which are believed to have arrived from the UK as far back as 2017, were discovered last week after port officials complained of a putrid odour.

"Some of the materials have been liquidised and deteriorated to the point that we cannot even examine them and the waste is emitting a bad odour," customs department spokesman Sunil Jayaratne told the newspaper.
