DEFRA moots ‘simplified biodiversity net gain calculator’

The government is planning to create a simplified biodiversity metric as part of its efforts to embed net gain in England’s planning system.

Launched yesterday, DEFRA is seeking feedback on an updated version of its biodiversity offsetting metric, which is intended to provide ecologists, developers and planners with a means to assess changes in biodiversity value (losses or gains) brought about by development or changes in land management.

Earlier this month, the government confirmed its intention to place a legal requirement on new developments to deliver a 10% gain in habitats biodiversity, as part of the forthcoming Environment Bill – DEFRA hopes the revised calculator will provide the technical means to achieve this.
