EA tightens checks on packaging exporters

The Environment Agency has (EA) increased the level of information exporters are required to submit in order to weed out the “unscrupulous operators” who are dumping material abroad.

In a three-page document circulated last week via the Advisory Committee on Packaging, the EA said the additional information must demonstrate that exported waste is high quality with minimal contamination and that destination sites are appropriately permitted to receive the waste.

It said 11 applications were rejected in 2019, while another six operators withdrew their applications for accreditation as the updated process highlighted they would be unable to comply with the regulations without significant business change.
