Gove’s handover: What’s on Villiers’ to-do list

Former environment secretary Michael Gove launched a raft of reviews, consultations and strategies during his time at DEFRA that will now have to be implemented by the incoming secretary of state, Theresa Villiers. ENDS takes a look at some of the key items on her to-do list.

Environment Bill – The content of the much-anticipated Environment Bill is becoming clearer, its major planks covering air quality (particularly a new objective for fine particulate matter), putting the 25-Year Plan on a statutory footing, waste, water and environmental governance. Read more

25-Year Environment Plan – The strategy that launched a thousand consultations, the plan sets out the high ambition to leave the environment in a better state for future generations but is reliant on consultations and finer grained plans in individual areas such as net gain before implementation can take place. A consultation on a new nature strategy and nature recovery network is yet to emerge. Read more
