EA: ‘No-deal Brexit could boost waste crime’

The challenge of illegal waste activity “may well increase”, should the UK leave the EU without a withdrawal agreement, the Environment Agency (EA) has warned.

In its annual report published this month, the regulator also said that Brexit preparations are creating new pressures on all resources forcing it to “slow down or stop other work, including that to tackle waste crime”.

“Much of our waste is exported for recycling and recovery overseas either legally or illegally and any disruption to transport arrangements could create incentives for criminals to dispose of it illegally in England instead,” it said.
