Packaging industry throws doubt on Villiers’ labelling pledge

New environment secretary Theresa Villiers has said that one of her first projects at DEFRA will be to devise a clearer labelling system for what materials can and cannot be recycled, but representatives of the packaging industry say consistent collection across all local authorities is needed first.

Speaking to the Times last week, Villiers said the current system, involving dozens of symbols, was confusing and holding back the recycling rate.

“The means of delivering increased rates of recycling is ensuring that people have a better understanding of what is recyclable and how to do it. This is an important issue for us as government. We are working on clearer labels,” she said.
