Theresa Villiers: What mark will the ‘Brexit hero’ make at DEFRA?

From visiting the stricken dam at Whaley Bridge to setting out her aim for a simplified recycling labelling system, Theresa Villiers has hit the ground running in her new role as environment secretary.

Green groups have cautiously welcomed her appointment, particularly following a speech at a Countryfile event, in which she endorsed much of environmental agenda set out by her predecessor Michael Gove. 

“It was great to hear her re-affirm the government’s pledge to bring forward a ground-breaking Environment Bill and a farm support system that rewards farmers for restoring nature,” said Adam Royal, head of advocacy at the National Trust, which had invited Villiers to speak at the event.
