Carbon price not enough to hit net zero emissions, say government advisers

The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) has warned the government that carbon pricing alone will not enable the UK to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

In a letter to ministers this week, the CCC said carbon pricing needs to be used “as part of a suite of policy instruments, as confirmed by real-world experience internationally”.

Lord Deben, the chair of the CCC, said supplementary policies, such as support for innovation and tackling barriers to behaviour change, would be needed to overcome preferences driven by factors other than price, as well as to deal with “myopia and price uncertainty”.
