Johnson government pledges support for fracking as Cuadrilla restarts operations

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has restated its commitment to shale gas exploration, saying extracting the fossil fuel is consistent with the UK’s legally-binding climate change targets.

A government spokesperson said shale gas “could be an important new domestic energy source” that would reduce imports and create new jobs. “It could also support our transition to net-zero emissions by 2050.”

The spokesperson added: “We have world-leading regulations that ensure shale gas exploration happens in a safe and environmentally responsible way. The Oil and Gas Authority is currently undertaking a scientific assessment of recent industry data which we will consider once completed.”
