'Blue water' school campus on former landfill is safe, review finds

An independent review into concerns over contamination at a school campus built on a site once used as landfill for industrial waste - including lead and arsenic - has concluded that the schools are safe.

The Townhead Road campus in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, was opened in 2012. It comprises three buildings - Buchanan High School, St Ambrose High and Townhead Community Centre.

Fears over the site's safety came to a head after it emerged that four people who had been members of staff at Buchanan High - three of whom had worked on the same corridor - had received treatment for bladder cancer. In June, teachers took part in a week-long strike, backed by the union NASUWT.
