The legal outfit, which has taken the government to court several times over its air pollution plans and won, said today that the councils have been put “on notice”, and reminded them of their “duties” to include emissions reductions targets and policies in their local plans, in line with the UK’s Climate Change Act 2008.
In June, the former prime minister Theresa May committed to slashing the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 after its advisers, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) deemed it “necessary, feasible and cost-effective”.
