Who is Rebecca Pow, DEFRA’s new junior environment minister?

In a mini DEFRA reshuffle prompted by Amber Rudd’s resignation, Boris Johnson has appointed Rebecca Pow as a junior environment minister. Here’s what you need to know about the department’s newest recruit.

Pow, who moves from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, is a well-known figure in environmental circles. Before her political career, she wrote about environmental and rural affairs as a journalist and communications specialist. 

Nor is it her first stint in DEFRA. In 2017, she was appointed as a permanent private secretary in the department. She also sat on the Environmental Audit Committee for a short period between 2016-2017 and has chaired the all party group on ancient woodland.
