Failure of test case on abandoned mines

A test prosecution in the Crown Court against British Coal concerning river pollution allegedly caused by mine abandonment has ended in failure for the Anglers Co-operative Association (ACA). The judge directed the jury to acquit in a case which underlined the complex questions of fact that can be involved where underground workings are involved, and how these may thwart successful legal action.
