Waste incineration levels double over five years

The amount of municipal and commercial solid waste being incinerated in England has more than doubled since 2013 and has been increasing every year for 10 years, according to data released by DEFRA.

The figures reveal that in 2018, 10.9 million tonnes (Mt) of waste was burned at municipal and industrial and commercial incinerators compared to the 10.3Mt incinerated the year before. This equates to a rise of 600,000 tonnes.
