Advancing the sustainable development agenda

A national strategy for sustainable development was published by the Government on 25 January, fulfilling a commitment at the 1992 Earth Summit.1 The strategy sets out a host of policy options for the next 20 years, but has been criticised for lacking targets and a clear vision of what sustainable development may mean for individuals, businesses and public bodies. But the process of putting the document together has accelerated the greening of Whitehall, and forced a crucial shift in transport policy.
