UK not geared up for climate change, MPs find

The government has failed to ensure that the UK is prepared to face the public health consequences of widespread environmental damage, according to a broad-ranging parliamentary report.

In particular, the National Health Service and the pharmaceutical industry are “not sufficiently resourced” to cope with climate change, the Environmental Audit Committee said yesterday.

Its report on ‘planetary health’ – defined as “the health of human civilisation and the state of the natural systems on which it depends” – also warns of climate change’s impact on nutrition and progress on biodiversity falling “woefully short”.
