A major government-commissioned review of England’s national landscapes has concluded that national parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty need more money, stronger protections and a major overhaul of the way they are managed. Here’s what you need to know about the review’s proposals.

Overall, the National Landscapes Review, led by writer Julian Glover, concludes that the current system is fragmented, marginalised and often misunderstood. The landscapes needs more money, better legal protections, a simpler designation process and better national oversight and management, it says.
