Why rewilding is on a roll

Post-Brexit changes to the way farming is subsidised are likely to see the concept of rewilding growing in popularity, but will farmers embrace the notion that their role in 21st century Britain isn’t solely to produce food?

Until this summer, it was safe to say that rewilding had made a limited impact on the broader consciousness of the British public, except for wildlife experts and enthusiasts or readers of the Guardian’s arch environmental polemicist, George Monbiot, author of Feral. Then, earlier this year, it appeared as a storyline in BBC Radio 4’s soap opera, The Archers, and some five million had suddenly heard about it.
