Green rules after Brexit: Goldsmith says deregulation ‘will not happen’

The government’s commitment to the environment has come under question by a coalition of the UK’s green groups, although environment minister Zac Goldsmith said today that deregulation “categorically will not happen”.

Goldsmith, who recently joined Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s cabinet, has rejected claims that the government is seeking to remove environmental standards. 

“Categorically that will not happen,” he told Friends of the Earth CEO Craig Bennett via Twitter. “We will have the same or higher standards than the EU, and better accountability (via the new OEP)," referring to the Office for Environmental Protection as set out in the draft Environment Bill.
