Biffa to pay £600k for illegally exporting waste to China

Waste giant Biffa has been fined £350,000 and ordered to pay £240,000 in costs after being found guilty of illegally exporting seven containers containing household waste to China in 2015.

During sentencing on Friday at Wood Green Crown Court, Justice Lord Auerbach said Biffa’s actions were “at the least, at the high end of negligence and shaded into recklessness”.

A date was also fixed for a June trial which will see Biffa face separate charges on four counts of the illegal export of waste to India and Indonesia in late 2018 and early 2019.
