Industrial noise stymies housing scheme

Permission to build up to 66 homes between a dual carriageway and a potato processing factory in Perthshire has been refused on appeal due to noise concerns.

The factory in Inchture, 10km west of Dundee, receives potatoes either from harvesting or from cold storage, temperature control being essential to maintain product quality. This requires refrigeration to operate continuously on site and intermittently on delivery lorries, both producing noise. The movement of vehicles and the operation of machinery also produces noise, which planning reporter Claire Milne found to be “particularly intrusive”, in a decision issued on Friday.
