EA declares ‘environmental drought’ in Herts and North London

The Environment Agency (EA) has declared an environmental drought in the Hertfordshire and North London area and dismissed accusations from local river groups that the agency had gagged its staff, banning them from acknowledging the drought.

Yesterday, ENDS reported that groups including the River Chess Association and the Chilterns Conservation Board believed that DEFRA was gagging EA officers, preventing them from talking about drought, even though long stretches of rivers had dried up and the EA officers themselves were privately admitting that a drought was indeed occurring.
