Council slams Villiers over failure to stop ‘intolerable waste crime epidemic’

A county council cabinet member has written to environment secretary Theresa Villiers, claiming that the Environment Agency (EA) has failed to shut down several illegal waste dumps in Surrey.

Mike Goodman, Conservative cabinet member for environment and waste at Surrey County Council, wrote to Villiers last week, demanding “urgent government” action on waste crime.

He said it was his personal mission “to ensure that we leave the environment in a better position than when we found it and that “in respect of unlawful waste activity in Surrey, this is currently not the case”.

Surrey County Council successfully issued an enforcement notice at a site near Guildford in November 2018. There are no waste exemptions or environmental permits in place for any of the long-standing waste management activities undertaken on the site.
