DEFRA claims ‘payments by results’ pilot a success for nature

A government trial in which landowners receive money for boosting wildlife has been deemed a success by DEFRA and Natural England.

The ‘payments by results’ approach awards land managers for the environmental outcomes they achieve and the government intends to use the mechanism to replace existing agri-environment schemes, which pay a flat rate for actions taken whether they work for wildlife or not.

Two pilots are ongoing, one in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire and another across Norfolk and Suffolk. Both began in 2016, supported by Natural England and in Yorkshire by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.
