Firm fined for discharge breach that put phosphorus levels 70 times over legal limit

A paint stripping business has admitted huge breaches of discharge consent conditions last week, having been prosecuted by Severn Trent Water.

Stafforshire-based Enviro-Strip GB Ltd describes itself as “market leaders in environmentally safe paint stripping for the automotive, manufacturing and process industries.” Its website also boasts of having an “excellent reputation” with the water company.

It was fined £2,400, with another £5,242 in costs at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Phosphorous samples taken by the water company in April 2018 were found to be more than 70 times the limit agreed. The court heard that zinc samples taken at the same time were more than eight times over the limit.
