Council rejects Ox-Cam expressway plan on climate grounds

A county council has withdrawn its support for a major road project on climate change grounds and called for a new railway line instead.

Oxfordshire County Council dumped its prior support for the construction of a new major road from Cambridge to Oxford last week, saying it “flies in the face” of its climate change emergency declaration.

During a meeting, councillors resolved to send a letter to the government expressing opposition to the expressway project “irrespective of which route is chosen.” The Labour Party motion was carried with 36 in favour, 11 against and eight abstentions on 5 November.
