Fracking: Cuadrilla finds high quality gas at second Blackpool well

Fracking company Cuadrilla has extracted shale gas at the “highest quality sampled to date” from its second well on the Preston New Road site near Blackpool

The gas consisted of 89% methane, 6% ethane and 2% propane, with “virtually no impurities”, according to a statement published by the company last week.

Cuadrilla will continue testing over the next few months to measure how the pressure of gas and fluids within the shale rock responds over time, a process known as an extended pressure build-up test that helps to work out how productive the well will be.

The quality test was based on a much smaller dataset than originally planned, after it triggered an earthquake measuring 2.9 in magnitude, forcing Cuadrilla to halt its operations at Preston New Road.
