Subsiding contaminated land forces community event ban

Community and sports events on a playing field overlying an old landfill site have been banned over fears the land has become unstable, according to reports.

Flintshire Council in Wales has banned all large public gatherings on its Centenary Playing Field due to safety concerns, forcing sports teams and an annual carnival to relocate, despite the land being designated for community use. 

According to a report, councillor Gladys Healey said it was prohibited to even sink a pole into the ground due to the contamination and that wildflowers had been mown back “with a big tractor” because they “couldn’t dig into the land”.
