In a dingy basement office in Brighton, Caroline Lucas is talking about the swift. The Green Party politician, who is campaigning to retain her parliamentary seat on a frosty November morning, is describing her awe at the diminutive bird, which, she explains, “can fly a million miles in its lifetime as it’s going backward and forward from North Africa”.
