Government ordered to publish secret fracking report

The information commissioner has ordered the Cabinet Office to publish parts of a 2016 report on the state of the UK’s fracking industry following a freedom of information (FOI) request from Greenpeace.

In a ruling made in October that came to light earlier this month, Judge Fiona Shanks upheld Greenpeace’s cross-appeal to gain access to the document, which was written by the Prime Minister’s Implementation Unit based in the Cabinet Office.

The report examined the potential state of the UK fracking industry in 2020, barriers to expanding the industry and ways the government could remove those barriers, and what can be learned from the experiences of other countries.
