General election: Johnson urged to take part in ‘climate debate’

Environmental campaigners have warmly welcomed plans for a televised general election debate devoted to climate change and have urged the Conservatives to join the UK’s other parties in confirming they will take part.

The debate, which will be hosted by broadcaster Channel 4 next week, has come in response to a campaign from the green group Possible that has received the support of over 70 civil society organisations. 

All the main opposition party leaders have agreed to take part in the debate, urging Johnson earlier in the week to follow suit on the basis that “the public are right to look to us, their politicians, for leadership” on climate change.
