Kent wind farm extension faces delay over saltmarsh mitigation

Business secretary Andrea Leadsom is considering tightening up protections for saltmarsh habitat that would be affected by the construction of the Thanet offshore wind farm extension, delaying a planning decision on the project until further details can be provided.

In a letter to Vattenfall Wind Power, the company leading the project, the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has said it is seeking views on whether to include stronger wording in the development consent order regarding the protection of saltmarsh.

Leadsom is considering including a requirement that work on laying cables to the windfarm extension may not commence “until a saltmarsh mitigation, reinstatement and monitoring plan, which must… be updated to take account of the final export cable route and chosen installation methodology, has been approved”.
