Oxford-Cambridge road link ‘has been cancelled’, says Conservative candidate

The Conservative candidate for Henley has said that the government has “cancelled” plans to build a controversial new road link between Oxford and Cambridge.

Speaking on an election debate on BBC Radio Oxford, John Howell, who has served as Henley’s MP since 2008, said while officials have decided against the project, an official announcement cannot be made while the government is under electoral purdah.

“The expressway has been cancelled,” he said this morning. “It hasn’t been officially cancelled because during the purdah period it would mean a major change in government policy that cannot be announced.”
