DEFRA biodiversity indicators reveal precipitous decline in protected species

The condition of important species and habitats protected under the Habitats Directive is deteriorating dramatically, according to revisions to DEFRA’s biodiversity indicators, published today.

DEFRA’s updated indicator for species of European importance, as set out under the Habitats Directive, reveals a significant decline in the proportion of species in ‘favourable’, ‘unfavourable improving’ and ‘unfavourable stable’ condition.

In 2013, 37% of species listed in the directive were categorised as being in favourable conservation status, but this dropped to 27% in 2019. Over the same period, those in unfavourable improving status fell from 11% to 5%.
