Liberal Democrats plan to abolish DEFRA

The Liberal Democrats’ environment spokesperson has said the party would abolish DEFRA as part of plans to create a new department for climate change and natural resources in the event of an election win.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today programme yesterday, Jane Dodds, who also leads the Welsh Liberal Democrats, confirmed the move would involve “replacing DEFRA”. 

When challenged over the fact the new department name does not reference farming or rural communities, Dodds said the party was committed to “making sure that our food producers and our farmers have the right support that they need to produce food profitably for the future of this country and that we profile the needs of our rural communities as well.”
